Given tone of his public appearances, many often have wondered if EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen was planning on running for political office one day. So it did not surprise some when EchoStar employees—positioned at entrances to keynote session handing out letter to retailers from Ergen—shouted “vote for Charlie” as attendees entered room. Even so, many heads were turned by EchoStar’s decision to use keynote session featuring Ergen to hand out company literature...FCC staffers and Copyright Office counsel Bill Roberts toured show floor Monday, stopping at several booths for technology demonstrations. Group also seemed particularly interested in white-area/distant station issue...EchoStar hosted about dozen Wall Street analysts Monday night to discuss industry and company developments. Several analysts toured show floor yesterday...Many were pleasantly surprised at large turnout at last night’s C-band segment reception. Reception included awards to dealers in several service and sales categories.

The Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association antenna subdivision will launch an Internet site for its mapping program this fall. The site, antennaweb.org, will display color coded maps of consumers’ neighborhoods based on their zip codes...Decisionmark is forming an antenna selector technology advisory committee to ensure the quality of off-air antennas the company recommends in its mapping programs. The group also will provide technical advice as Decisionmark develops its new mapping services...MTV announced Monday it is creating original movies for television. MTV will begin airing the films on its network this winter...Pegasus Communications is offering former DBS subscribers savings to re-activate their accounts. The program is directed to former subscribers who were either disconnected by Pegasus or voluntarily ended their subscriptions...Hughes Electronics’ reported its second quarter revenues increased 29.7 percent to $1.76 billion, compared with $1.37 billion in the second quarter of 1998. DirecTv added 369,000 subscribers during the quarter, excluding subscribers added through the U.S. Satellite Broadcasting and Primestar transactions...Turner Broadcasting System officially named its new channel covering women’s issues The Women’s Network.
