Hewitt Makes Pitch For Industry Unity
The satellite TV industry needs to work together more if it is going to have the type of impact it needs on Capitol Hill, Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association President Chuck Hewitt said during a speech yesterday. “We really need to get the industry more pulled together,” he said. “We have to be a unit working together for the common good.” Numerous Capitol Hill hands have said the satellite TV industry might have gotten more of what it wanted from last year’s satellite TV bill had they presented a unified front. The satellite TV industry has done a much better job of working together in the past six months, Hewitt contended. During his keynote remarks yesterday, EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen said the general “lack of cooperation” between the DBS companies has perhaps held the industry back. In fact, Ergen’s remarks at the keynote and a later press conference later lacked the type of fireworks he has become known for, with many saying they were surprised how flat his brief appearances were. Hewitt also said the SBCA needs a bigger budget if it wants to compete with the National Association of Broadcasters and National Cable Television Association.

Inside [Show] Business
Two of C-band’s earliest pioneers are making first satellite show appearance in some time. Ron Wysong, who lead R. L. Drake during C-band’s heyday, is exhibiting in MDU section of show. And Hero Communications, owned by Bob Behar, is also at show. Behar, who runs successful uplinking and operations firm in Miami, may be best remembered by some for uplink production he staged in Washington during now legendary “Satellite Earth Station Day” in October 1984...Two long-time satellite TV hands have moved on to computer world. John Breckenridge, best known as field representative for Showtime and RS&I, is now doing same for ISP Channel, a cable modem and Internet service provider. ISPC is a consumer division of global Internet services company SoftNet Systems...Meanwhile, Lia Tysdal quietly departed industry for Internet world several months ago. Tysdal returned to her native San Diego to work for Internet firm Akamai. Tysdal previously worked for General Instrument in San Diego, and has worked for Playboy Channel and, most recently Discovery Communications.
