FCC Official Urges Satellite
TV to Speak up
With more requests for
scarce spectrum coming in at the FCC all the time, the companies
offering satellite TV service need to step up their efforts to
let lawmakers and regulators in Washington know they have more
to offer, particularly in the burgeoning high-speed data market,
FCC International Bureau Chief Don Abelson said. They have
to get the message out, he said in an interview after a
meeting with Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association
board members. Satellite TV has enjoyed a favored
status in Washington in recent years because lawmakers and regulators
have been so anxious for a true competitor to cable. Now that
satellite TV is providing that competition, the industry needs
to tell its story about what it is going to do next, Abelson
said. Abelson also said the FCC is reviewing Northpoint Technologys
plan to share DBS spectrum to offer a terrestrial microwave multichannel
video/data service, but declined to say when it might finish.
In general, Abelson said, the FCC would like to grant licenses
for new and innovative services. However, he added, the FCC faces
tough decisions about making sure interference problems can be
mitigated.
