Education Takes Priority at Show
With new and more complicated satellite products and services coming out all the time, the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association is placing a heavy emphasis at this year’s convention on educating retailers, SBCA spokesman James Ashurst said. “There’s just been such a run of new products [this year] that the educational aspect [of the show] is truly going to be the focus this year,” he said. The SBCA is offering numerous education workshops at the show dealing with things such as local-local-local, home theater, and high-definition television. Well-educated retailers will be able to help customers adjust to the changes that are coming, and avoid the types of customer service problems that have plagued the cable industry, he said. In addition, the SBCA is working again with the Independent Cable and Telecommunications Association to host workshops and panel discussions to explain the ins and outs of the multiple-dwelling unit market.

SBCA Restructures to Provide More Interaction Between Industry Groups
The Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association yesterday adopted a reorganization plan designed to increase the amount of communication between satellite TV industry sectors, as well as provide a more focused way to tackle various issues, SBCA President Chuck Hewitt said. To start with, the SBCA changed from a “segment” structure to a “membership category” structure, so that, for instance, the programmer segment is now known as the programming membership group. There also now is a “satellite broadband” membership group. The SBCA also established numerous working groups on subjects such as education, technology, public affairs, signal security, marketing, public relations, and advertising, meetings and events, and research.
