Satellite Show Daily Forum
Satellite Business News
asked a group of satellite TVs most prominent leaders for
their views on several of the industrys most pressing questions.
Each day, The Show Daily will present answers to different questions.
First up: Several well-known programmers have decided not to
exhibit at this years SBCA show...What future do you see
for the SBCA show?
Scott Weiss, Speakeasy Inc.: The SBCA has already
begun the process of reinventing itself to attract a broader
membership and focus its scope on more value-related subject
matter. Once this transition is completed, there will be less
reliance on the programmers.
Stan Hubbard, Hubbard Media Group: As SBCA
has successfully evolved to meet the changing face and challenges
of the satellite TV industry, so it will with the show.
Rik Hawkins, Starpath Satellite: Satellite TV is
not the last frontier of delivery for content. The next might
well be in the PC/Internet-driven area, bringing streaming content
to PC/TV monitors...Politically speaking, the SBCA may well be
the only true voice smaller basic programmers have in the marketplace.
When this is realized, I think the SBCA show becomes an exciting
venue to explore future marketplace developments, commercially
as well as politically.
Eddy Hartenstein, DirecTv: The show is evolving
as the industry evolves. There is an increased focus on growing
markets like MDUswhich is evident on the show floorand
in training for dealers and installers. SBCA is well equipped
to track trends and constantly re-calibrate how the trade show
will best serve the industry.
Leslie Nittler, Starz Encore Group: The value
of exhibiting has diminished since there are only two main DBS
distributors. There is still a need to get in front of the dealers.
However, we have that opportunity at EchoStars Team Summit
which allows [Starz Encore Group] to interact with 1,800 dealers.
And both DirecTv and EchoStar have an annual event for their
top dealers...The SBCA has developed a way to make the show more
useful for programmers by including a training pavilion as well
as reducing the overall costs to programmers. We are testing
the effectiveness of that this year and will make a determination
about exhibiting in 2001 after this SBCA.
