CEMA, Showtime, and SBCA Introduce Satellite TV on the 'Net
Citing the fact that most consumers are undereducated on satellite technology, Gene Falk, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Satellite, Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association, and SBCA President Chuck Hewitt announced yesterday the launch of BuyADish.com, a web site designed to inform customers about the basics of satellite TV. Noting the Internet is a high-traffic, low-cost advertising method, the group designed the site to be distribution system-neutral and strictly informational. The site will contain links to the major DBS providers and C-Band companies, as well as links to programming options available via satellite. The site was designed to cure the "deer in headlights syndrome" customers often feel when shopping for a satellite system, Shapiro said. The site is slated to launch Oct. 15 and will contain spaces for advertising that will help fund the site's operation. However, Falk said, the site will not be turned into a platform-specific site by over-advertising from one provider. Ultimately, the group hopes the site will be paid for by the major platforms and programmers, with excess money from advertisers going to the T. Howard foundation. In addition to information about current DBS providers, programmers, and C-Band, the site will contain a test which allows consumers to find out if a satellite system is right for them. Consumers will not be able to purchase satellite equipment directly from the site, he said.
