Inside [Show] Business
Lots of grumbling last night from SBCA staff and some board members
about Primestar's decision to hold barbecue for dealers away
from show during association's official welcoming reception.
Several companies sponsored SBCA reception, which was supposed
to attract most of show attendees...HBO and USSB are nearing
agreement to offer HDTV feed of service as part of HDTV channels
DirecTv/USSB system owners will have access to later this year.
Announcement could come in few weeks... Thomson Consumer Electronics
won major victory last week when International Trade Commission
overturned earlier ruling that security card reader in DirecTv/USSB
receivers infringes patent owned by French company Innovatron...Lots
of talk yesterday about which PrimeTime 24 executives will attend
show and what they will say. Some argue PrimeTime 24 has not
communicated enough with industry since Miami court issued injunction
against company, while others were surprised about President
Tom Casey's comments last week that company has not received
enough support from industry...Longtime industry veteran and
SBCA President Chuck Hewitt, who has weathered many changes in
satellite TV land over years, addressed dealers at DSI-CSS seminar
yesterday, warning industry is "going to see substantial
change for some time." Hewitt said he was not trying to
be "negative," but added "it's very important
that you're aware of the fact that life's going to be a lot different
here in two years."
Satellite Industry News Briefs
TVN Entertainment plans to rebate C-Band dealers $5 for every
NFL Sunday Ticket customer they sign up through Dec. 27...Projectavision
demonstrated a 60-inch front-and-rear projection TV yesterday
at the DSI-CSS dealer seminar. The set carries a $12,000 suggested
retail price and sells to dealers for $8,499...Turner Home
Satellite is featuring a "NASCAR on TBS Super Speedway"
interactive game in its booth this week. The mock version of
a NASCAR racetrack features remote control cars attendees will
race against each other to win an authentic "NASCAR on TBS"
leather jacket...Heisman Trophy winner, Notre Dame football great,
and former Green Bay Packer Paul Hornung will be in ESPN's
booth today from 2 to 4 p.m. signing autographs and promoting
ESPN's GamePlan college football package for dish owners. ESPN
also plans to give away an autographed football with signatures
from Hornung, Joe Namath, Frank Gifford, and Gayle Sayers.
