DSI/CSS Urges Distributors
to Stick With C-Band
Repeating the mantra that C-Band dealers should be getting potential
customers to change "I can't have a big dish to Why can't
I have a big dish?" DSI/CSS today reiterated the importance
of the C-band market. In a seminar for satellite dealers, the
company stressed C-Band still has 2.1 million subscribers and
stated C-Band dish owners are "at the top of the TVRO pyramid."
DSI/CSS encouraged dealers to seek out higher-end customers who
are more likely to purchase other electronics products and accessories
from dealers, such as home theater systems and DVD players. The
company also stressed such a strategy will be important when
high-definition TV hits the market in full force. General Instrument's
Joe Cornwall pointed out C-Band is ideally suited for the distribution
of video in general, and HDTV in particular. However, when asked
how dealers can provide C-band to customers on multiple televisions,
Cornwall could only argue customers' desire for multiple television
reception has been planted by the cable companies. He told dealers
to remind their customers most families watch television from
a single room, and for those who watch more than one set at once,
network stations are still available on other televisions. DSI/CSS
also made a point of praising General Instrument's 4D-TV receiver
as an addressable, downloadable, computer-based system with "unparalleled
ease of use." Cornwall also pitched the importance of "leveraging
your customers," encouraging dealers to send regular newsletters
to their customers, use direct mailings, and approach businesses
who may be interested in C-band technology. He also encouraged
dealers to stay focused on C-band sales rather than getting into
other businesses.
