Investment bankers were spotted yesterday at Primestars
Denver headquarters, leading to new talk company is continuing
its discussions with DirecTv about possible sale of medium-power
DBS company. According to financial sources, there is no reason
to believe DirecTv is any closer to reaching agreement to buy
Primestar than it has been in recent weeks...Speaking of Primestar,
many are not surprised company skipped CES this year, but some
argued it would have made sense for Primestar to have some presence
on show floor...Speaking of non-exhibitors, several satellite
TV industry hands wondered yesterday why General Instrument has
virtually no presence at CES. After all, several noted, GI is
supposed to be spearheading plan to revitalize C-band industry
and its also heavily invested in cable set-top boxes, which are
slated to hit retail shelves later this year for first time...EchoStars
new WebStar Internet satellite receiver got lots of attention
yesterday on show floor. But that attention may have over-taxed
demonstration units, with several visitors to booth reporting
units experienced glitches during demos. On other hand, fact
EchoStar had WebStar unit here on display irked competitor DirecTv.
One senior DirecTv executive said he was disappointed EchoStar
demonstrated Internet satellite box first, since DirecTv has
been working on similar product for some time.
Satellite Industry News Briefs
Pegasus Communications, one of the largest rural DirecTv programming
distributors, launched an Internet site, www.pgtv.com, to provide
corporate information to investors and others...The Consumer
Electronics Manufacturers Association plans to hold its fourth
annual digital TV summit March 2 in Tysons Corner, Va. The one-day
meeting will include executives from the broadcasting, cable,
and satellite TV industries, including the Satellite Broadcasting
and Communications Association. CEMA also plans a new conference,
Retailing and the Internet, to help consumer product
retailers learn how to take advantage of the fast-growing online
market. The conference will be held May 18 at the Omni Dallas
Hotel at Park West...DirecTv selected FutureTrak International
to distribute its DBS service to the multi-dwelling unit market...Discovery
Communications completed its purchase of CBS Eye on People. The
network, now based in Discovery's Bethesda, Md., offices, will
be renamed Discovery People Monday.
