Meanwhile, Toshiba announced revised release schedules for its integrated high-definition TV sets with DirecTv Plus receivers and a standalone DirecTv receiver. The company now plans to make the 65-inch TV set available in February for a suggested retail price of $8,499.99, Director of Product Management Scott Ramirez said yesterday. The standalone unit is slated for an April release at $999, he added. In addition to decoding DirecTv signals, both products will enable viewers to decode off-air digital signals, Ramirez said. The standalone receiver also will be capable of converting digital signals for viewing on standard analog TVs, and feature an integrated on-screen programming guide, he added. Toshiba had planned to release the units late last year, but pushed back the releases partially to accommodate DirecTv’s new local-into-local services, which the DBS service began offering in December, Ramirez explained. Panasonic also plans to release “a completely integrated” DirecTv receiver capable of decoding all forms of standard and high-definition signals, Panasonic President Don Iwatani told reporters yesterday. The new system is slated for release this spring for a suggested retail price of $999, Panasonic Manager of Advanced Product Planning David Naranjo said after the press conference.
Sony Electronics expects to start selling a DirecTv receiver capable of receiving signals from more than one satellite and connecting to digital TV sets. Sony has not settled on pricing or a release date for the product, Sony spokesman Rick Clancy said. Sony does not have any plans at this time to produce TVs with built-in DirecTv receivers, though the company has not ruled it out. Meanwhile, DirecTv sister company Hughes Network Systems unveiled its “Platinum HD” line of DirecTv receivers, which are scheduled for a second quarter rollout. The receivers are capable of decoding high-definition and digital signals from DirecTv, as well as off-air analog and digital broadcast signals.
